Omaha, NE—If you are a property owner in Douglas County, NE, there is a chance you might receive a “recorded deed notice” from Record Transfer Services, a company that offers to provide a copy of a property owner’s deed, and related documents, to the owner—for a price … $83.00, to be exact.

In fact, at least one property owner already has been contacted, according to Diane Battiato, Douglas County Assessor/Register of Deeds.  She has no doubt many more owners will be solicited.

“A property owner visited me, today.  She wanted to show the notice to me, and  ask whether it was legitimate,” Battiato said.  “She was concerned about the fee, of course, but more importantly, about sharing information that could be used against her, in some way.

I explained that Record Transfer Services is not affiliated with our office.  And also that she doesn’t have to pay $83.00 for a copy of her deed because deeds are public record.  She, as well as any other property owner, can obtain a certified copy from the Douglas County Assessor/Register of Deeds office for less than $10.00.”  Deeds usually are one or two pages.

Battiato applauds the individual who came to see her.  “Owners should be very protective of their property because it is one of their most important and valuable assets.  If an offer or service seems suspicious, you should investigate further before you commit.  You never can be too careful.”
